As lifelong rural northeast Kansans, we have witnessed our share of auctions. In 2023, we were faced with some very tough decisions regarding family property. We made the decision to select Mayo Auction and Realty, a turn-key regional company from the greater Kansas City area to help us with the sale of farm and residential real estate along with the contents of those properties. We felt this was the best balance to get both personalized service and larger national reach.

Our family property contained nearly 100 years of accumulated vehicles, farm equipment, household items, and collectibles. We worked to clean, organize and prepare our items, and Mayo staff catalogued and staged an overwhelming amount of personal property. In total, Mayo sold 1,100 lots of personal property for us, ranging from classic cars, vintage collectibles and farm equipment, all the way to very basic housewares and decor. The real estate was sold in three tracts. In addition, over 500+ collector items were sold at their Cornerstone and Scott Avenue showrooms.

The online auction services reached a greater audience of potential buyers than a traditional on-site auction. Our advice to others who are considering this route is to be an engaged partner with Mayo and do what you can to clean, prepare, sort and organize your items in order to recognize more profit. You will pay some labor rates for the time Mayo’s staff needs to prepare and catalogue your items for online sale. Consider where your time and efforts are best spent, what you can do and where you need Mayo to do more. The nominal fees that we paid for staff time was money well spent when compared to our overall auction results.

Sara, the operations manager, and her entire team were immensely supportive, professional, and knowledgeable during the onsite item preparation and cataloging, pre-sale viewing, and item pick up after the sale. It was an amazing experience to see the blue-shirted Mayo professionals parking cars, directing folks to areas of interest, and troubleshooting last minute issues.

Our experience with the sale of individual collector items from their showroom was the same. Scott and his team sorted and staged and involved us in the process, while taking the burden away. Both teams were exemplary in their communications and hard work.

Finally, our real estate transactions went great. Robert Mayo acted in our best interests as our real estate agent, and his administrative staff were timely, accurate and helpful at every step.
